Streets of Hope - the Stray Dogtor

Esperanza Verde - Peru
This wildlife rehabilitation and rescue centre mainly stood out due to it's great setup and location in the middle of the amazonian rain forest, near Pucallpa in Peru. It's quite remote so you have to be comfortable with living in the jungle with all pros and cons involved. They built a lovely camp, so you're living pretty comfortable with showers, toilets, a kitchen (everything is shared space of course), a modern and sturdy quarantine area and a little clinic. We shared this space with all sorts of creatures - insects, spiders, lizards, frogs, butterflies, moths and so forth (you get used to checking your shoes every time before you put them on...),and of course the more noticeable specimen like monkeys, agoutis, tortoises, birds, coatis, peccaris etc...
Some are shyer than others, some too proactive for my taste (having monkeys climb on you for various reasons isn't for everyone).. Overall it was a great time in the Jungle, the serenity and beauty of the forest and the river will have a place in my heart forever. Medical care is mainly provided as preventative measures (parasite treatments, nutrition), or emergency care for injured animals. The main tasks are daily feeding, cleaning, construction and other caretaker duties. There's not much routine surgery to do, although we castrated a few monkeys, which was quite an interesting experience! It's definitely a big adventure and not for the faint of heart. Days are long, work is hard and living conditions are very simple. But it's a very rewarding experience if you want to get away from the modern life for a while.. The volunteer team was lovely and we sure looked after each during our stays.
